Standby generator

A generator intended to supply power when the normal source is unavailable.

Automatic transfer switch

Equipment that transfers a load between normal and alternate power sources automatically.

Critical load

Equipment or operations selected to receive backup power.

Load bank

Equipment used to apply a controlled electrical load during testing.

Paralleling

Operating multiple generators together through coordinated controls and switchgear.

Day tank

A smaller fuel tank arranged to supply an engine, often from larger storage.

Exercise cycle

A scheduled generator run intended to verify operation and maintain readiness.

Carbon monoxide

A colourless, odourless, poisonous gas produced by incomplete combustion.

Backfeed

Unsafe or unintended electrical flow into circuits or utility systems.

Authority having jurisdiction

The local or regional authority responsible for applicable rules and approvals.
